Ranchi, April 22: Four persons were arrested yesterday in two incidents of rape reported from different parts of the state. But unlike Delhi, they failed to draw much public attention.

The Latehar police today forwarded three youths to jail on charges of gang-raping a 14-year-old Class IX girl in the late hours on Saturday. The rapists, identified as Guddu alias Sajjad Ansari (21), Rocky alias Md Gulfam (19) and Md Shahid (20), are natives of Tilaiyatoli under Chandwa police station area.

The girl, who stays with her parents behind Chandwa block office, was friendly with Guddu. On Saturday afternoon, he lured the victim with a promise of gifts and invited her to the backyard of his house. Guddu then called his two friends, Gulfam and Shahid, and gang-raped her.

A checking drive was on near Chandwa Chowk when our men noticed a girl walking alone on the street around 3.30 am on Sunday. When they stopped her, she narrated her woes. Her statement was recorded and raids were made to nab the culprits, said SP G Kranti Kumar.

In Dhanbad, the police arrested a private tutor for allegedly raping his 12-year-old student in Jorapokhar on Saturday. Earlier, similar incidents were reported from Chatra, Deoghar and Giridih in the last 3-4 days.

In Chatra, a 17-year-old girl was gang-raped three days ago when she was returning home with her uncle from a Ramnavami procession.

Five youths tried to gang-rape a girl at Atkadih village of Giridih district on Saturday evening while she was on her way back home from a village haat. They also robbed her of cash and other belongings worth over Rs 8,000. One person has been arrested.

In Deoghar, district public relations officer Jawahar Kumar and district welfare officer Ashok Prasad were arrested yesterday for sexually exploiting a computer operator for several months in the name of regularising her job.

In another development, former officer-in-charge of Hussainabad police station Arvind Sinha was suspended yesterday for sexually exploiting a woman. Sinha is now posted at Nagarutari police station in Garhwa district.
