Silchar book berth in semi-finals

Guwahati, April 19: Silchar stormed into the semi-finals of the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy senior inter-district elite group cricket tournament by virtue of a first innings lead against Jorhat in the first three-day quarter-final that ended at Barsapara Cricket Stadium here today.

Leading by 197 runs in the first innings after bundling out Jorhat for 80 in reply to 277 for eight on the second day yesterday, Silchar today resumed their second innings at overnight 47 for no loss and declared at 223 for eight in 54.2 overs. Jorhat conceded the match without playing a single ball in the second innings.

Kaushik Giri topscored for Silchar with 95 in the second innings. Besides, Yatin Malik scored a 58-run knock, hitting 10 boundaries. Samik Das also chipped in with 42.

Dayal Krishna Dutta of Jorhat accounted for four for 89 and Istiaque Ali claimed three for 41. Kaushik Hazarika picked up the remaining one wicket for 35 runs.

AIFF official: The AIFF has appointed Assam Football Assocaition secretary Ankur Dutta as vice chairman of the AIFF I-League and Federation Cup committee for the term 2013-16.

Karate meet: The 2nd South Assam Zone inter-district Karate-do Championship of the United Karate-do Association, Assam is going to be held at the Kalakshetra, Cement Corporation of India, Bokajan in Karbi Anglong district from tomorrow.

Trials: The Greater Guwahati Karate-do Association will organise a selection trial on Sunday at the United Karate-do Association, Assam premises here to name the district squad for the 2nd Central Assam Zone inter-district meet to be held at Nellie in Morigaon district on May 4 and 5.

Sujay Dam of Assam defeated 11th seed S. Premjit Singh of Manipur while second seed Rajib Dhar of Assam managed to settle for a draw with 91st seed under-11 player Saptarshi Gupta of West Bengal on the second day of the 5th Jugal Kishor Newatia FIDE Rating chess tournament at Terapanth Bhawan in Guwahati today.
