Teacher worth $13.3 billion

Mark Zuckerberg

Mr Facebook revealed last week that he moonlights as a voluntary middle-school teacher in East Menlo Park, California, near the FB headquarters. The $13.3 billion man lectures about how to build a business and once a week he discusses projects with his students.

J.K. Rowling

After spotting a job advert in The Guardian for English teachers in Portugal, she moved to Porto, shared a flat with two other girls, and taught at the Encounter English School. It is during her stay in Porto that she wrote the first drafts of what went on to become Harry Potter. She is said to have modelled some of the characters in Potter world on her teachers.

Art Garfunkel

After securing a master’s degree in mathematics from Columbia University, one half of Simon & Garfunkel taught maths at Litchfield Preparatory School in Connecticut. But then Bridge Over Troubled Water happened and changed his life.

Sylvester Stallone

Rambo and Rocky could have become a beautician or gym teacher. The action hero was a problem child who enrolled in beauty school after high school. Soon he took off for The American College of Switzerland in Leysin where he worked as gym teacher. He returned to America to pursue drama at the University of Miami before moving to New York. Desperate for a role, he played a part in the soft porn Party At Kitty And Stud’s (1970, above), which was later edited and re-released as Italian Stallion.

Sting

Before Gordon Sumner became Sting, he was the only male faculty member (others were all nuns) at St. Catherine’s Convent School in Newcastle. Mr Sumner taught English, soccer and, of course, music. It was during his stint here that he acquired the nickname Sting and married his first wife Frances Tomelty. But then he decided to put in his papers and scrape by on dole. Not for long.

Jon Hamm

The Mad Men hunk must have broken many a heart as drama teacher at John Burroughs High School in St. Louis. Among his many students is Ellie Kemper, whom you know best as Erin Hannon in The Office and Becca in Bridesmaids (2011).

Barack Obama

The 44th President of America didn’t “serve time” teaching snot-covered kids but after graduating from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, he was a constitutional law professor and senior lecturer at the University of Chicago. At one point he juggled three “jobs” — writing his memoir Dreams From My Father, practising civil rights law and lecturing.

Billy Crystal

The actor and stand-up comedian made $42.50 a day as substitute teacher at Long Beach Junior High School. He was offered a permanent teaching job on Long Island and had he taken it, Harry would never have met Sally!
