Guwahati, March 22: Oil India Ltd (OIL) has volunteered to sponsor the Assam Athletics Association’s 37th state inter-district junior and senior meet at Nehru Maidan in Duliajan from April 4 to 6 with a view to recruit athletes to revive its squad.
This was disclosed today by Assam Athletics Association secretary Pradeep Nunisa, who added that the tournament, which was earlier scheduled for April 4 to 7, was curtailed by a day on the local organising committee’s request. The local organising committee, headed by OIL general manager (administration and PR) N.R. Deka, comprise Duliajan Sports Association working president and former footballer Ramesh Phukan and its secretary Diganta Dihingia, among others.
Nunisa said OIL has come forward to sponsor the event with the aim of spotting talented athletes to be recruited under its sports quota. “This is the first time a corporate house is coming forward to sponsor an entire event in athletics in the state. We welcome their gesture as well as their initiative to revive the athletics squad. Such initiatives will help athletics grow in the future,” he said.
“Deka told us that the male performers in the meet would be considered for recruitment into OIL,” Nunisa added. OIL officials, however, refused to comment on this.
