Jail vacancies to be filled up

All vacant posts in jails across Jharkhand will be filled up shortly. The word has come from none other than new IG (prisons) Ashok Kumar Sharma.

Ahead of a surprise inspection at Ghaghidih Central Jail on Friday evening, Sharma declared that the posts of jail superintendents and assistant jailers in most of the 26 prisons of the state were lying vacant. As such, a large number of jail staff was also required, he added.

“The ball has been set rolling for the recruitment process. I have written to Jharkhand Public Service Commission to hire jail superintendents and have also urged the Staff Selection Commission to appoint assistant jailers,” said Sharma.

He pointed out that as the recruiting process was bound to take some time, he had recommended hiring of 650 personnel on contract basis. They will be deployed as a stopgap measure till the posts of jail superintendents and assistant jailers were filled up through proper channel.

The senior prison officer further said revival of human resources in the prisons was his priority. He firmly believed that greater the manpower, the stronger a jail would be.

On the proposed shifting of Naxalites from one jail to another for security reasons, Sharma said he was yet to review the proposal.

“Naxalites are also a part of our society. If there are some instances of jailbreak, it does not imply that all of them tend to flee. We are keeping a strict vigil on rebels lodged in various jails. If a rebel, undertrial or convict, stays peacefully and does not create any problem, then there is no need to shift him to any other prison,” he said.

Sharma, who joined the post of IG (prison) on March 1, said his surprise inspection at Ghaghidih Central Jail was aimed at checking the security apparatus. He added that he would recommend steps to beef up vigil only after taking stock of the existing security arrangement at the prison.
