Supporters had no role in attack: EB

Calcutta: East Bengal distanced itself from attack on Prayag Group chairman Basudeb Bagchi’s residence, late on Wednesday.

A mob, alleged to be East Bengal supporters, pelted stones Bagchi’s residence, in Behala, after the IFA Shield— was brought there by United SC footballers and officials.

“These persons simply cannot be our supporters,” East Bengal secretary Kalyan Majumdar said on Thursday. “We don’t support hooliganism. Elements who resort to such acts only tarnish the image of their club.”

Meanwhile, the Prayag Group issued a statement condemning the incident. “We are shocked and saddened by the sudden incident of violence, amidst joyful celebrations, perpetrated on the Bagchi family and residence last night.”
