Srinagar, March 21: A BSF jawan was killed and were two others injured today in a militant attack barely a week after another deadly strike, heightening fears of a spurt in militancy after Afzal Guru’s hanging.
The militants had chosen the crucial bypass that connects North and South Kashmir to ambush two BSF vehicles. The bypass is used extensively to ferry troops and supplies.
The deputy inspector-general of the BSF, I.S. Rana, said three jawans were injured in the attack at Methan bridge on the bypass. One of them later died in hospital.
Police sources said the militants opened fire at the vehicles of the 8th Battalion around 7.30am. The BSF retaliated and the firing continued till the militants fled. The police identified the slain soldier as Krishen Kalita.
On March 13, a fidayeen attack on a Bemina ground killed five CRPF jawans. After Guru’s execution, the militants had vowed to avenge his death.
