An assistant sub-inspector of Calcutta police was suspended on Thursday after a woman green police volunteer accused him of outraging her modesty and criminal intimidation.
The 22-year-old civic policewoman posted at Phoolbagan police station of the eastern suburban division, has alleged that she was verbally abused by B.P. Banerjee, an officer at the same police station, and had been “under tremendous pressure” for the last few weeks. She officially reported the matter to her seniors on Wednesday, after which a case was started against the ASI.
Banerjee has been charged under a section dealing with sexual harassment. If found guilty, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.
“The accused police officer has been suspended,” said Pallab Kanti Ghosh, joint commissioner of police (crime).
Asked why the officer had not been arrested, the deputy commissioner of the eastern suburban division, Satyajit Banerjee, refused to comment.
Senior officers at Lalbazar who did not wish to be named said the accused ASI was not arrested as the charges pressed against him were “non- cognisable”.
