Shrivelled lemons on a healthy tree prompted a woman cop raiding the house of a suspected thief to uproot it and find the stolen booty buried underneath.
The detection led to the arrest of a woman who had allegedly stolen a gold chain worth over Rs 60,000 and buried it under the tree.
A team from Garfa police station reached the house of Shibani Naskar in Baruipur based on a complaint of theft filed against her on March 9.
The complainant, Mansingh Pal, had hired Shibani from a nurse-cum-ayah centre to take care of his ailing mother in the first week of March. Naskar worked in the Pal household for just two days before quitting. When the elderly woman’s chain couldn’t be found after a few days, Mansingh suspected it to be the handiwork of Shibani.
Based on his complaint, the police raided Shibani’s house.
“We found nothing in the house. But the lady officer spotted something unusual about a tree in the courtyard,” said an officer. A closer look revealed the tree had been uprooted, causing the fruits to dry up. “We dug a few inches deep and found a pot with the stolen chain.”
