A group of unidentified people on Wednesday afternoon barged into the Taratala office of the city-based PSU Balmer Lawrie and assaulted an official.
Salil Banerjee, a “permanent officer” in charge of yard operations at Balmer Lawrie’s container freight station office, has been admitted to BP Poddar Hospital in New Alipore. A hospital official said he was bleeding from the nose.
The company has lodged a complaint with Taratala police station. Banerjee’s statement has been recorded.
“It is not yet clear why a permanent officer working at our CFS office at Taratala was assaulted. The incident happened in the afternoon and a police complaint has been lodged. We hope the culprits will be arrested soon,” said a company spokesperson.
Police sources said the assault was the fallout of an altercation that broke out over the issuance of gate passes for parking empty containers at the Transport Depot Road office.
Located close to Netaji Subhas Dock under the Calcutta Port Trust, Balmer Lawrie offers cargo handling solutions to companies for inbound and outbound cargo at the city port.
The container freight station office also offers customs clearance to exporters and importers.
