Gangtok, March 19: The official car of T.N. Sharma, the chairman of the Sikkim Commission for Backward Classes, was allegedly set on fire near here today.
According to an FIR lodged with the Gangtok police station, some unidentified persons allegedly set ablaze a white Scorpio parked in front of Sharma’s residence in Sichey, around 8km from here.
The FIR stated that Sharma, 58, was fast asleep at his residence when the car was set afire around 1am today.
“I heard some people raising the alarm. When I stepped outside, I saw the rear end of my vehicle burning. I immediately called the fire station,” said Sharma.
“I don’t want to comment on the matter, let the police carry out their investigation” he added.
“We received a call from the chairman at 1.15am. A fire tender was rushed to the spot,” said Prakash Rai, the deputy chief fire officer.
The police said a case had been registered and an investigation was going on.
“We have registered the case and the police are carrying out the investigation, no arrest has been made so far,” said the deputy inspector general of police, Mandeep Tuli.
