A 69-year-old resident of Camac Street was hit on the head with a hammer and was robbed of her jewellery on Tuesday afternoon.
Footage from the closed-circuit camera in the apartment block where Shakuntala Devi Ladia lived on the seventh floor suggests the incident occurred between 1.13pm and 1.16pm, police said.
Doctors at CMRI Hospital said Ladia had suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and her condition was critical. She has been admitted to the intensive care unit.
“A case under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) has been started. The accused is absconding. We think the accused is known to the victim’s family,” said an officer of Shakespeare Sarani police station.
A complaint lodged by the woman’s son Sunil says his mother was alone in the apartment and talking to her granddaughter over the phone when the bell rang.
After opening the door, she told the person to sit and went inside to fetch something. When she turned back, the person hit her on the head with a hammer, the complaint states.
The granddaughter, who was still on the line, heard her shriek and called up her father. According to the guard of the building, the priest of the Ladias had turned up around that time.
