Mayor Sovan Chatterjee’s budget for 2013-14 came under attack on Tuesday, with the CPM raising doubts over the revenue forecasts.
The budget statement left unsaid what measures the departments will take to mop up the projected revenue, restricting itself to stating an estimated income under various heads. “You have proposed to raise Rs 738.25 crore in property tax in 2013-14 but the waiver scheme that had helped earn a huge amount in property tax in the current fiscal cannot be offered in the next,” said Dipankar De, the head of the municipal accounts committee.
More than 34 per cent of the property tax revenue in 2012-13 came from the waiver scheme.
