Nod for elderly tribunals

The state government has issued a notification regarding setting up of maintenance tribunals at the district and sub-division levels to implement Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, providing relief to the elderly.

On Tuesday, Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC) member Neel Mani wrote letters to all divisional commissioners asking them to take steps for execution of the act.

The sub-divisional officer would head the tribunal. All districts would have an appellate tribunal headed by the principal judge of the family court. An assistant director of social security in the district has been designated as the maintenance officer.

With the notification issued, maintenance tribunals at sub-division levels can order maintenance up to Rs 10,000 per month.
