Canning woman ‘raped’ at gunpoint

Calcutta, March 19: A 30-year-old woman in Canning was allegedly raped at gunpoint by a history-sheeter while her husband was away for work last night.

The accused, Manirul Sardar, 35, was arrested this afternoon, hours after residents blocked a road in Amtala, where the lady’s house is located.

The nephew of the homemaker’s husband said Manirul, who was out on bail in a robbery case, came to the house late last night with a pipe gun.

“My uncle was not at home then (the lady’s husband is a labourer who had gone for work in Basirhat). I was sleeping in the courtyard. Manirul shook me out of sleep and started beating me up. My aunt came out of her room, hearing the commotion. Manirul dragged her into the room and locked it from inside. He threatened me against stepping out of the house,” the 16-year-old said.

The lady and the boy raised an alarm after Manirul left. Several residents accompanied them to the police station, where they lodged a complaint against Manirul.

This morning, the villagers put up a roadblock for an hour. “Everyone here knows Manirul is a criminal,” said Sahidul Islam, a resident. The blockade was lifted after the police assured that the accused would be arrested.

The additional superintendent of police of South 24-Parganas, K.P. Barui, said Manirul was arrested from a bus stand in Canning this afternoon. The gun is yet to be traced. Barui said Manirul had several criminal cases against him.
