Harass blame on police

Malda, March 18: The grandmother of a gangrape victim lodged a written complaint with the district police chief today alleging that two officers of Kaliachak police station tried to shield the main accused and threatened her when she demanded his arrest.

The 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped in the Binnagar area in Kaliachak by four men around 6pm on March 13. The girl had identified the men and narrated the incident to her mother and grandmother. Three persons were picked up but the main accused is still at large.

“Even after five days, the main accused, Bura Sheikh, has not been arrested. When I went to the Kaliachak police station this morning around 9, two officers threatened me and said they will put me in the lock up. They said if I wanted to survive, I should remain silent. They abused me saying it was they who would decide whom to arrest,” said the woman.

Today around 11am, the 50-year-old woman, a resident of Kaliachak, 35km from here, arrived in Malda town.

“We lodged an FIR with Kaliachak police on March 13 and were asked to take the girl to the police station on Saturday to record her statement. As the police were busy with the Prime Minister’s programme, we were told to go back on Monday. But when I told the police that the main accused was still not arrested, I was shouted at by two officers,” said the grandmother.

District police sources said the woman had lodged a complaint against Pradip Sarkar and Ram Saha, both sub-inspectors at the Kaliachak police station.

Malda police superintendent Kalyan Mukherjee said: “Four persons had been named in the complaint lodged with the Kaliachak police station. We have already arrested Sadiqul Shiekh, Murshed Sheikh and Karim Sheikh. We are looking for Bura Sheikh. I have received a complaint (from the girl’s grandmother) that some officers in Kaliachak police station had behaved rudely with the victim’s relatives. I am looking into the matter and have summoned the officers concerned.”

The girl’s father, a farmer, said: “Bura Sheikh is the son of the former Congress member of Binnagar-II gram panchayat. All four culprits are known for their anti-social activities in the area and yet only three have been arrested.”
