Pathak murder puzzle

Dhubri, March 18: The mystery of the murder of agriculture superintendent engineer Gadapani Pathak is yet to be unravelled even a year after the arrest of nine suspects.

The ninth, Pradip Roy, a member of the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation, and wanted in Pathak’s murder, was arrested by Bengal police from Kamakhyaguri in Jalpaiguri in north Bengal a few days ago and was handed over to Bongaigaon police. He is now being interrogated at Abhayapuri police station of the district since the past couple of days.

Earlier, eight suspected KLO activists were arrested.

The militants abducted Pathak and engineer Faizul Islam on May 2 last year in Bongaigaon district.

The CID, investigating into the case, arrested nine KLO activists from various parts of lower Assam and north Bengal so far but still the motive behind the murder is unknown. The CID suspects that many are still at large.

Last year, Bongaigaon police had claimed to have had a major breakthrough in the Pathak murder case after a KLO activist, Hiranya Roy, confessed that he had killed the agriculture engineer.

The KLO activist was arrested by Bongaigaon police from Gauripur in Dhubri district on July 13 last year and handed over to a CID team.

Dilwar Hussain, another accused who was arrested by Bengal police on December 1 last year and later brought to Bongaigaon, revealed vital information, sources said.

Hussain was arrested from Uttar Pakhiriguri village in Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district for his involvement in cases of murder and truck robberies there. The CID has still not wrapped up the case as it believes that there were still some more persons at large, though KLO involvement in the case is more than confirmed, a police source said.

When contacted, Bongaigaon superintendent of police Abhijit Bora said since the case was being investigated by the CID, it was improper to comment on it.
