Resolution on Afzal rejected

Srinagar, March 18: The Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Mubarak Gul, has rejected a resolution moved by an Independent legislator seeking the mortal remains of Afzal Guru.

Legislator Sheikh Abdul Rasheed, who represents Langate and had moved the resolution last month, said the Speaker informed him about the decision in a letter tonight.

“This is the murder of democracy,” Rasheed told The Telegraph.

Rasheed said though the Speaker has cited technical reasons for disallowing his resolution, “this is all a drama in which both the (ruling) National Conference and the Opposition (People’s Democratic Party) are actors and its director is New Delhi”.

The Speaker could not be reached for comment. The National Conference and the PDP, however, support the demand to return Afzal’s body.
