Mancini court date today

New Delhi, March 17 (PTI): Italian ambassador Daniele Mancini is expected to face tough questions tomorrow from the Supreme Court when it takes up the issue of Italy reneging on its undertaking to send back its marines charged with the killing of two fishermen off the Kerala coast last year.

Law minister Ashwani Kumar, who today described Italy’s refusal to send back the marines “after giving undertaking to the highest court of the country” as “unprecedented”, still hoped the court’s order will be complied with before the March 22 deadline for the marines’ return.

“The attorney-general will convey the government’s stand tomorrow depending upon the response of the Italian government in the court,” he said.

Harish Salve, who has quit as the Italian government’s counsel, said in response to a query on diplomatic immunity: “Our Constitution commands everybody will act in aid and according to directions of the Supreme Court.”
