Rain arrests mercury march

- Pitter-patter to keep Jharkhand cool for a day or two

Sunday brought shower surprise for a sweating Jharkhand.

A trough of low pressure — stretching between Meghalaya and coastal Odisha — triggered light rain across the state, dragging down the tormenting Celsius several notches below normal.

While capital Ranchi and its adjoining areas recorded over 4mm in 24 hours, heat chamber Daltonganj received around 1mm. Steel city Jamshedpur and its neighbours experienced 2mm rainfall. The shower sop was accompanied with winds at 15kmph.

The Patna Meteorological Office, in its short-term forecast, has predicted partly cloudy skies with rain and thunder in isolated pockets. “Under the influence of low pressure, several districts of Jharkhand received rainfall today. More is to come,” confirmed director A.K. Sen, the director.

Weathermen said easterly winds were dominating over the state for the past two-days and this was resulting in heavy moisture incursion into the atmosphere, which, in turn, formed clouds.

The moisture is also pushing up the relative humidity. On Sunday, the maximum and minimum relative humidity was more than 90 and 50 per cent at several places, the highest in a month.

Overcast conditions and intermittent rain arrested the Celsius surge. At several places, the maximum reading even witnessed an abrupt fall.

The local weather office in Jamshedpur recorded 28.1°C against Saturday’s 31.6°C. The temperature was seven notches below the average normal. The minimum was 20.9°C against 21.5°C some 24 hours ago.

The daytime reading dropped to a cool 26.4°C in Ranchi, which was 30°C on Saturday. The maximum on Sunday was five notches below the average normal. The night temperature saw little fluctuation.

In Daltonganj, the maximum stayed at 29.2°C for the second consecutive day. The reading was six notches below normal. The Celsius also went easy on Koderma, Hazaribagh, Latehar, Garhwa, Dhanbad, Deoghar and Simdega.

Satellite pictures on Sunday indicated patches of medium clouds across the state. Weathermen at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Calcutta said the cloud cover and intermittent rain were keeping the mercury under check.
