Five held for blaze

Police arrested five men allegedly involved in the Saturday morning Maheshtala fire, which chief minister Mamata Banerjee called a “small incident” though 1,200 people were rendered homeless.

Known to be followers of Dulal Das, chairman of the Trinamul-run Maheshtala Municipality, they were picked up and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days on Sunday following an FIR by one of the victims of the blaze that gutted 700 shanties. The FIR mentions their names along with a “chairman” and three others.

The police booked them for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means and hatching criminal conspiracy — both non-bailable sections of the IPC. However, the police did not press for their custody for questioning.

Urban development minister Firhad Hakim visited the spot on Sunday and assured the people that the CMDA would rebuild the houses.
