Bhopal, March 16: A Swiss tourist on a cycling expedition with her husband was allegedly gang-raped in a Madhya Pradesh forest where they had camped for the night yesterday.
The incident in Datia district, the constituency of a key minister in the state’s BJP government, occurred around 9pm when eight men assaulted the 39-year-old woman and thrashed the husband as he tried to resist, police said.
Medical tests at a hospital in nearby Gwalior, where the woman was admitted today, confirmed rape.
The Swiss embassy described the incident as “distressing” and sought a “swift” investigation, according to PTI. Ambassador Linus von Castelmur has spoken to the victim and assured her of all help, the mission said in a statement.
Thirteen persons have been arrested so far, the police said in Datia, a town near the Uttar Pradesh border. The couple were on way to Agra.
