State trails on Day 4

- Andhra girl takes lead after eight rounds

Jamshedpur, March 16: Andhra Pradesh’s Sushrutha Reddy surged clear of her nearest rival by one point to emerge as the sole leader after round eight of the 3rd JRD Tata International Chess Tournament at the JRD Tata Sports Complex today.

Reddy, who finished on eight, is a point ahead of Bengal’s Arpan Das. Three players — Jharkhand’s Nishant Kumar, Vikas Kumar Dwivedi of Bihar and Rahul Singh Soram of Assam — secured 6.5 points each and are tied on the third spot.

A bunch of seven players, Malla Nuka Raju (Andhra Pradesh), Manish Uniyal (Delhi), Rajdeep Sarkar (Bengal), Vijay Kumar (Bihar), Roop Saurav (Bihar), Samar Chatterjee (Bengal) and Ashutosh Kumar (Bihar), are tailing the leaders on the fourth spot with six points each.

The tournament, which entered into its penultimate day today, saw table topper Reddy outwitting Soram to clinch the lead. The Andhra girl made some excellent moves on the board to bamboozle her opponent and remain unbeaten.

In other matches, Jharkhand’s Nishant matched his opponent Rupesh Jain (Bihar) move for move to snatch a draw. Jain’s Bihar state mate Dwivedi too was held for a draw.

Raju, who till now had displayed some good form, however, was shocked by Bengal’s Das, while Uniyal was not let off the hooks by Sarkar and had to be content with a draw.
