Ranchi, March 16: Grey cells were tried and nerves tested today at the regional round of the 9th National Quiz Competition — organised by Delhi’s All India Management Association (AIMA) — on the Ashok Nagar campus of Jharkhand Rai University in Ranchi.
Two teams of Ranchi-based Marwari College qualified for the final after a gruelling day that saw the participation of 22 teams.
Saurav Suman and Pankaj Prasad came first, while Nazrul Islam and Kumar Gunjan finished second.
Ranchi was the fifth city to host the regional round of the quiz after Chennai, Udaipur, Guwahati, Calcutta and Patna. “Three more regional rounds are scheduled in Lucknow, Meerut and Dehradun before the national final is hosted in Delhi,” said Mantosh Singh, manager of centre for management development of AIMA.
The quiz kicked off with a written round where the participants had to tackle 15 questions ranging from identifying the photograph of a young Sachin Dev Burman to naming Goa’s famous spirit made from coconut or the juice of cashew apple (Feni).
The written round was followed by Straight Shots, which tested contestants with questions like the name of the television channel that is known for its logo/icon Yellow Box (National Geographic) and the country whose intelligence agency is Mossad (Israel).
In the other rounds, the participants were asked to identify Anand Mahindra, the CMD of Mahindra & Mahindra. They were also shown a clip from a movie and asked to identify the novel (Angels and Demons by Dan Brown) on which it was based.
“It was a nice experience, but we should have prepared better,” said Neha Kumari whose team did not qualify for the final but won a gift by answering a question that had been passed on to the audience.
