Patient up on hospital sunshade

Siliguri, March 15: A Siliguri district hospital patient today tried to jump from the second-floor window sunshade after he ran out of the ward, broke ventilator panes of a bathroom and stayed perched precariously for several hours till firemen brought him down.

The youth was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday night in an unconscious state by some local residents. Sanjib Majumdar, the acting superintendent, said he regained consciousness yesterday and seemed mentally-challenged.

“This morning, the youth wet his trousers. Around 10.30am, as paramedics tried to change his clothes, he turned violent,” Majumdar said. He pushed the paramedics away and ran to the bathroom. The youth broke the panes of a ventilator and managed wriggle through it. Within minutes, he was standing on the sunshade just beneath the ventilator.

The paramedics informed Majumdar and policemen at the hospital who broke the bathroom door. Meanwhile, the fire brigade was informed.

“He was still standing precariously on the sunshade. As we broke in, Gopal Das, a liftman, grabbed him from behind while others used a rope to bind him with a grille,” a hospital hand said.

Around 11am, a fire engine reached the spot. The firemen raised a ladder and two of them reached the sunshade. The duo caught hold of the youth and brought him down.

Majumdar said: “We would send him to NBMCH as he is a mentally-challenged person and we do not have infrastructure for psychiatry here.”
