Rural folk art forms on your designer saris? Trust Jharcraft to turn that dream into a reality.
Jharcraft — a state agency that supports sericulture farmers, weavers and artisans — on Friday started a three-day painting workshop at its main showroom near Kadru crossing in Ranchi that is seeing participation from 21 folk and contemporary artists. The artists will etch out their works on the canvas as well as on saris that will be later put up for sale by the handicraft development corporation.
Jharcraft has also allowed all the artists of the camp to bring with them their old art works that it will put for sale at its showroom.
The artists during the inaugural day painted out their imagination in varied forms. Suresh Swain, along with three others from Raghurajpur village of Puri (Odisha) started painting out an attractive design with bright fabric colours on a plain silk sari. “They are trying to create a design that is a mix of the patachitra art form of Odisha and sohrai art of Jharkhand,” said Sobha Rani Lakra, a Jharcraft-employed designer who is supervising all the works. She added that the idea was to make the saris more attractive.
Jyoti Panna, a sohrai artist from Gumla district’s Sisai who has been feted by the state for her work, however, chose the paint her thoughts on a canvas.
“I use indigenous colour at my village. But here I am using synthetic colours as these are convenient,” she said.
Lalita Devi of Barkagaon (Hazaribagh) was also working on a sohraiwork. But instead of doing on it a wall as they normally do or even apaper (as Panna was doing) she was working on a silk saree here.
As expected, the visual artists did not make much progress on thefirst day. Rajiv Ranjan and Praveen Karmakar of Ranchi were amongthose who did to some extent. While Rajiv progressed with a dreamysequence with soothing colours,Praveen advanced on a contemporarypainting depicting on canvas a tribal mother and child duo in theirnatural surroundings.
With such sarees on racks, visiting the showroom will surely be morerewarding next time, felt Seema Akhouri who just dropped in to havea look at the new arrivals .EOM ¦¦ ·¦¦ ·
