Mary Ann clinches bronze

Calcutta: Bengal’s Mary Ann Gomes clinched the bronze medal on the fourth board in the World Women’s Team Chess Championship held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

According to information received here, on Thursday, WGM Mary, who’s a product of The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Championship, ended the meet on 6.5 points from a possible nine with a rating performance of 2508.

The highlight of her performance was a win over IM Alisa Galliamova (2459) of Russia and a draw with Chinese WGM Tan Zhongyi (2471). IM Soumya Swaminathan, too, finished with bronze on the fifth board, scoring five points in eight rounds. It turned out to be a commendable show from the Indian players as they finished fifth despite the absence of their top three players.

Ukraine bagged a gold medal, while China won silver.
