ISM fest off to rocking start
- Bagful of fun on Day One

It was a show of glamour and grey matter at Dhanbad’s Indian School of Mines as Srijan 2K13, the three-day annual techno-managerial fest of the cradle, got off to a rocking start on Thursday.

The much-awaited event, which has more than 1,000 students from various technical institutes — NIT-Patna, St Xavier’s College, Ranchi; BIT-Sindri, BIT-Patna, BIT-Mesa and NISM, Calcutta, being some of them — participating in it this year, will see a host of events being organised during its course.

The day started with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by ISM director Durga Charan Panigrahi to formally declare the celebrations open after which the action shifted to the Penman Auditorium.

More than 30 to-be-engineers let their hair down and shook a leg at the auditorium during the preliminary round of Solo Beat — the solo event of dance competition Footloose — which was judged by Kalol Das and Ganesh Shelke of Mumbai-based Remo Dance Institute.

The event, which kicked off around 10am, continued for three hours with each participant being given a maximum of three minutes to perform. At the end a total of 12 students, including three from the host cradle, were selected for the final round scheduled for March 15.

“Though we were supposed to select only 10 students, there was a tie and we ended up selecting more,” said Ravi Dwivedi, the co-ordinator for Footloose. The solo event was followed by a group dance, called Hustle Herd.

A war of bands, titled Avalanche — held in the open air theatre of the lecture hall complex — also drew healthy crowds.

Next in line was a mime competition where eight teams — each comprising three to four students — drew the attention of the audience at the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre towards a host of issues like women’s security and corruption. Renowned artiste from Allahabad Natya Sangh Vimal Dhar judged the event. According to schedule, Mumbai-based DJ Shireen will wrap up the inaugural day with a performance in evening.
