After touring “75 countries” and “being watched by a quarter billion” people, airing 2,000 episodes and running into 192 seasons, Dancing With The Stars has reached Calcutta as Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Bangla. The dance reality show is ready to beam into our living rooms from March 18, Monday to Saturday, 8.30pm, on ETV Bangla. “The celebrities will have to be diverse, interesting, committed and there has to be great dancing…. The show should make you feel good about watching television. It is fun, it is family, it is glamour and it is trying something innovative,” Myleeta Aga, general manager and creative head of BBC Worldwide Productions India, told t2 on the sidelines of the official unveiling at Shree Narayan Studios in Joka on Wednesday. Here’s what t2 made of the first jhalak…

How strict will you be?
I am very lenient as a teacher and I wish I could have given everyone 10 on 10! Everyone is putting in their best effort. Some of them rehearsed for hours for this one whole month, and it is showing. I am nervous too because I will have to mark them!
But you seem to be good at calling a spade a spade...
(Smiles) Because I want them to improve… so I told some of them what I thought... It is going to be a long journey for them. When I see someone performing, I see their grace, I see how comfortable they are. No matter how nervous you are, you cannot show it. Sometimes you end up counting the beats, 1, 2, 3, 4 on stage, and you can almost lip-read it. That is something you cannot be doing. Most importantly, you need to have fun.
Which star would you have loved to dance with?
Elvis Presley!
Are you a natural dancer?
Rhythm is inside me and I should be thankful to my father (Ranjit Mallick) for this! As a child, he used to put me on his shoulders and swing to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay’s Palki chole hun huna, hun huna re....
Your favourite dance numbers?
I have a lot of favourite Madhuri Dixit numbers… all the songs of Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! Then Beta.
Can your husband Nispal Singh (better known as Rane) dance?
He has a good ear for music… but about dance dot, dot, dot!
Remo D’Souza
Did you expect the quality that you’ve seen?
Frankly, I did not! It was a big surprise for me!
What will you make them do?
Everything! (Laughs) They are going to have a tough time now… a lot of dance forms, which they haven’t even heard of!
