Dhubri, March 13: Police opened fire to rescue an assistant sub-inspector of police who was taken captive at Rakhasani under Mornoi police station of Goalpara district following an attack on the villagers by unidentified men in which a boy was killed and another boy was seriously injured today.
A source in Goalpara said in the attack by the unidentified group of people, a 15-year old boy, Azibar Ali, was killed and another boy identified as Hazer Ali was injured.
The attack and death of the boy infuriated the villagers who took an assistant sub-inspector of police captive. The policeman was part of a patrol team nearby. Sources said the villagers accused him of helping the attackers to flee.
However, when a police team rushed to spot with reinforcements to rescue the ASI, it had to fire in the air to disperse the mob.
Additional superintendent of police, Sushanta Biswa Sarma, said villagers thought that the ASI could have arrested the attackers but, in fact, he was quite a distance away from the site of the incident. “The situation was brought under control after the villagers were pacified that the attackers would be caught,” Sarma said.
