NDFB abducts driver

Tezpur, March 13: A civilian driver was abducted by a group of suspected militants of the Songbijit group of the NDFB near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Sonitpur district yesterday.

The daring abduction took place even though the driver was accompanied by three jawans of the intelligence department from the army base in Misamari.

Sonitpur police have started a search operation to trace the driver identified as Sukumar Das, 32.

According to sources, the three-member intelligence team along with the driver had gone in search of the hideout of NDFB militants in the foothills under Misamari police station, about 70km from Tezpur.

The team was confronted by a group of militants and Das was abducted at gunpoint.

Sonitpur superintendent of police, Arabindra Kalita, said militants were active on the inter-state border and the abduction is suspected to be the handiwork of the Songbijit group.

“A search operation was launched last night in collaboration with the army and Assam police,” he said. Kalita added that the army officers have not filed any FIR on the abduction.
