OIL-B, Indian Oil win

Guwahati, March 13: OIL-B and IOCL (AOD) registered victories in their respective matches of the inter-unit Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) football tournament at Nehru Maidan in Duliajan today.

OIL-B blanked Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL) 3-0 in the match held in the morning while IOCL outplayed GAIL 4-1 in the second match played in the afternoon.

For OIL-B, in-form striker Tridip Khound struck first blood in the 18th minute to put Chennai Petroleum on the back foot. Four minutes later, the hosts consolidated their position with Jatin Das netting the team’s second goal.

The hosts dominated the first half and gave no inroads to the opposition. The remainder of the first half, however, did not see any more goals.

OIL dominated the second half as well, as the CPCL forwards lacked cohesion and failed to penetrate the opposition defence. In the 17th minute of the session, Duleswar Gogoi earned OIL the third goal.

Down and almost out, the CPCL players could not offer much resistance till the final whistle.

The match between IOCL and GAIL, too, was one-sided. Maverick striker Indranud Saikia opened the account for IOCL in the seventh minute. However, GAIL managed to draw parity in the 22nd minute with Sanjay Bhattacharjee finding the net.

Jolted by the goal, IOCL stepped up the offensive to regain the lead, but could not in the first half.

The second session, however, saw IOCL netting three goals, with two of them in quick succession.

In the second minute, Bijoy Saikia made it 2-1, while eight minutes later, Nripen Buragohain netted another to make it 3-1.

GAIL tried hard to reduce the margin, but in vain. IOCL’s Krishanu Saha struck the final nail in the GAIL coffin with another goal in the 34th minute.

IOCL will meet ONGCL in the first semi-final while OIL-B will lock horns with OIL-A in the second tomorrow.
