Trinamul ‘vandalism’ after HC order

Haldia, March 13: More than 500 Trinamul supporters allegedly damaged furniture at Haldia Municipality and smashed the windscreen of a vehicle, a day after Calcutta High Court ordered the East Midnapore police chief to ensure that the Left-run civic body could place its budget on Friday.

Trinamul activists, led by civic Opposition leader Debaprasad Mondal, staged a demonstration in front of the office to protest “acute water scarcity in most wards”.

“The submersible pumps have become defunct in most wards, leading to acute water scarcity. The Left-run municipal authorities are doing nothing to give the residents any relief,” Mondal said.

The protesters then went on the rampage in a ground-floor room.

The high court had give the order after Haldia Municipality chairperson Tamalika Panda Seth and 14 other Left councillors moved a petition alleging that Trinamul members were not allowing them to conduct board meetings.

District additional superintendent of police Amitabha Maity said no complaint had been lodged. “We will take steps only after we receive a written complaint,” he said.
