Calcutta: Having registered a fine win against Malaysia’s Selangor in their AFC Cup opener, Kingfisher East Bengal will aim to maintain their good run when they take on Sai Gon Xuan Thanh of Vietnam in a Group H away match on Wednesday.
East Bengal are in tremendous form. They are the only team in the IFA Shield to win all their matches. The success of East Bengal lies in the fact that they have managed to keep their key players fresh and without any injuries at the most crucial time of the season.
However, the AFC Cup is a different ball game altogether. Not only are the players’ skills put to test, their ability to perform under pressure will also be tested.
East Bengal coach Trevor James Morgan sounded confident that his side will show character when they face group leaders Sai Gon at the Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City. “I hope that the side will translate our domestic form to the continental stage…
“It will be a tough game for us… We will be facing a very good opposition… They have won their last game by coming from behind and their spirits will be high. But we are not wary of them.
“We are confident and we will play our own game… I hope that my players will show character,” said the Englishman.
A win against Sai Gon will certainly boost East Bengal’s hopes of progressing beyond the group stage.
