Guwahati, March 12: Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (AOD) edged past Gas Authority of India Ltd 1-0 in a group A match of the inter-unit Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) football tournament at Nehru Maidan in Duliajan today.
In an evenly contested match, both teams tried to gain the upper hand by raiding the opposition’s territory. However, none could make a breakthrough in the first half, thanks to a stout defence.
The IOCL forwards, however, combined as a unit after the lemon break. In the 26th minute of the second session, striker Indranud Saikia caught the Gail defence napping as he scored the only goal of the match.
Gail, for their part, tried hard to draw parity, but in vain.
Unlike today’s match, hosts Oil India Ltd-B had blanked CPCL (Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd) 4-0 in the inaugural match yesterday. CPCL, however, can make amends when they take on OIL-B for the second time tomorrow. In the group A match to be played in the afternoon, IOCL (AOD) will take on Gail.
Altogether six teams in two groups are taking part in the tournament. The hosts, OIL, are fielding two teams. The final will take place on Saturday.
