Debutant TFA check veterans

Tata Football Academy (TFA), which debuted in the I-League this year, contained East Bengal to a goalless draw in the 6th edition of the Under-20 tourney at JRD Tata Sports Complex on Tuesday.

The other fixture at the same venue saw Dempo beat ONGC 2-1. In the matches pl-ayed at Gopal Maidan, Mohun Bagan registered a 1-0 victory over Churchill Brothers, while Sesa Goa scripted a 2-0 win over Air India.

Both TFA and East Bengal played aggressively but were unable to convert their chances. Indrajit Paul and Biswajit Das from East Bengal saw yellow cards from the referee. While East Bengal advanced to the next round with 10 points from four matches, TFA went to the next level with seven points from three matches.

ONGC’s Pawan Thakur was the first to score in the fixture between ONGC and Dempo. Thakur’s goal in the 15th minute gave ONGC the lead with which they went into the lemon break.

Dempo equalised just after the break with Clencio Pinto finding the net in the 46th minute. Both outfits fought hard but it was Myron Fernandes’ goal in the 51st minute, which proved to be the winner. ONGC’s Nitin rawat was shown a yellow card for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

The deadlock in the match between Mohun Bagan and Churchill Brothers was broken when Bagan’s Prohlad Roy scored from the left flank in the 51st minute. The second half was dominated by the Calcutta side, who went into the next round with seven points from three matches.

The last match of the day saw Sesa Goa posting a confident win over Air India. Mauvin opened the account for the Goan side in the 50th minute when he converted a cross from the right. Allwyn’s goal in the 86th minute sealed Sesa’s victory.
