Munna case prosecutor removed

Calcutta, March 12: The special public prosecutor who had opposed the bail plea of Trinamul councillor Mohammad Iqbal (Munna) in the Garden Reach murder case said that he had been removed abruptly tonight.

Naba Kumar Ghosh was appointed special prosecutor a day before Munna was produced in court in connection with the murder of sub-inspector Tapas Chowdhury. Ghosh had put up spirited arguments against Munna’s bail plea in the Alipore court on Saturday.

“A CID officer contacted me tonight. I was told not to represent the CID in court further. They will recruit another public prosecutor,” Ghosh said tonight. “I have no idea about the reason behind my sudden removal.”

Contacted, special IG, CID, Vineet Goyal, said: “I have no knowledge.”

But another officer involved with the investigation said Ghosh had been removed.

Ghosh had successfully prosecuted Aftab Ansari in cases relating to the American Center attack of 2002 and the abduction of a shoe baron.

Allegations had surfaced earlier in another case involving a controversial Trinamul leader that a public prosecutor did not strenuously oppose the bail petition.
