New Delhi: Indian boxing on Monday suffered yet another embarrassment in the international arena when its national team doctor was removed from the official hotel during the Asian Youth Championships in Philippines.
The incident took place when the International Boxing Association (AIBA) asked the Indian team doctor Nirmolak Singh to vacate the team hotel as India were not allowed to have any official in an international meet till Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) remain under suspension.
AIBA also barred the Indian boxers from wearing the national team jersey bearing the logo of the IABF sponsor. The international body had stated that Indian officials would not be allowed to accompany the team and boxers would have to compete under the AIBA flag.
While the doctor had to be hurriedly shifted to a separate hotel, a fresh set of plain jerseys had to be bought for the Indian team. A shocked secretary, ministry of sports, P.K. Deb said: “I am amazed how the suspended IABF send the team doctor despite being banned by the AIBA.”
