Calcutta: Batsman Avishek Das and pacer Manojit Ghosh are the two new faces in the Bengal squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 Trophy, which begins in Agartala, from Sunday.
Impressive figures in the local circuit earned both Avishek and Manojit the reward at the expense of Sudip Chatterjee and Sandipan Das, who should concentrate more on the longer version, selectors emphasised.
“We felt that Avishek and Manojit could be ideal choices for this format of the game. They have been doing well lately. So they rightly deserved a chance. As for Sudip and Sandipan, we need them to play a valuable role in the game’s longer version and focus more on it. That’s why they have not been included in this squad,” chairman of selectors Deep Dasgupta said after the selection committee meeting on Monday.
Bengal will also miss Manoj Tiwary and pacer Veer Pratap Singh, both of whom are nursing injuries.
Bengal begin their campaign on Sunday against Assam.
