Calcutta: Former cricketers on Monday reacted sharply to the exclusion of four Australian cricketers for the third Test against India.
While former Australia captain Allan Border said that it was an over the top reaction, Tom Moody called the decision a ‘reckless one’.
Reactions on Twitter (alphabetically)
Damien Fleming: On a positive note Ed Cowans presentation has just been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize
Ian Healy: Disappointed in the news of the players being sent home. Lead up to the Ashes is struggling. Need to get back on top
Dean Jones: Implications from these actions are serious… I feel it is deeper than it appears. Aust are in trouble!!
The major question that should be asked. Why didnt the players give the presentations? were they scared of saying their opinion? Or Lazy?
Before killing off Micky and Pup or the 4 Players alleged transgression, there are always 2 sides to every story. It will all come out
Coaches in all sports often asks his team on how they are travelling? Asking for suggestions etc.. No big a deal is it?
Darren Lehmann: Adults we are, not schoolboys! Please let’s act properly and make good decisions in India! Need these boys playing.
Damien Martyn: To many wrong people are picked for jobs who give a fancy presentation!!
Tom Moody: From my experience report writing is not a player’s strength, no surprise to hear some failing, need to focus more on field short comings?
This thing is turning ugly, Watson now heading home, hard/reckless decisions like this can set teams back, surely we need our guys playing?
Michael Vaughan: What is going on with Aussie Cricket?? Didn’t realise you had to do an essay to get a selection these days..!!!!!
What I am confused by is that the coach of Australia asked the players for only 3 things to improve the team??
Shane Warne: As I have always said the coach should not be a selector. He should communicate well with the players & help them prepare, that's it !
The issue of 4 players being unavailable for Aust selection due to not delivering homework or a report to the coach, the answer is simple
The Capt runs the team & in conjunction with the selectors picks the team. The Capt should always have final say. Ridiculous what's happening
Allan Border: I’m surprised that’s the penalty for something so mundane. It seems like it was on a schoolboy tour or something. It's an over the top reaction.
Adam Gilchrist: Sometimes it gets to a point where you do need that time to clear your head and get away from it. India is that sort of venue that becomes all-consuming... It consumes every part of your day and your night and your life, such is the passion and the intensity of the place.
So to get away and make a clean break for the purposes of freshening up for a new challenge there, I found it extremely beneficial and I think our team prospered from that in 2004.
Mark Waugh: I’m stunned. I’ve never heard of this sort of thing before at top level in any sport. When you are losing there are niggling things there but they’re grown men, it’s not school boy stuff. It’s not under-6s, this is Test cricket… there would have been a better way.
