Manipur Police-A in final

Imphal, March 11: Manipur Police Sports Club (A) galloped into the final of the 23rd Governor’s Polo Invitation Polo Tournament 2013, defeating MPSC (B) by 9-5 goals at Mapal Kangjeibung today.

It was a closely-fought game but the Manipur Police (A) team picked up pace in the second chukker with a crucial three-goal boost to steal the show.

The Police (A) team raced ahead in the first chukker with S. Bimol Singh and S. Somorjit Singh striking a goal each for the lead.

However, the Manipur (B) team found the equaliser through T. Pradeepkumar and S. Abungcha for a 2-2 score in the first chukker.

In the second chukker, Police (A) surged ahead with M. Jawan hitting home two goals while S. Bimol contributed one goal.

Manipur Police (B) were rewarded for their efforts in the third chukker, with S. Abugcha and T. Abungcha scoring a goal each to close the gap.

However, their efforts went in vain, when Manipur Police (A) fired in two goals through Jawan and Bimol Singh to post a 6-4 lead.

Manipur Police (A) perked up in the fourth chukker when M. Surjit and S. Somorjit hammered in two goals while Manipur Police (B) managed to add one more goal.

Ultimately, Manipur Police (B) had to concede defeat by 9-5 goals.

In the women’s event, Imphal Riding Club (A) moved into the final, defeating Chingkhei Hunba Polo Club by 11-0 goals.

Resignation: The general secretary of the All Manipur Football Association, L. Ranjit Roy, along with two others, has tendered their resignations following charges of match-fixing and poor performance of the Manipur team in the Santosh Trophy.

According to association president A. Santoshkumar’s press communiqué, general secretary Ranjit Roy, assistant general secretary L. Jyotirmoy Roy and executive council member S. Amutombi Singh tendered their resignation in the wake of match-fixing in the 7th Manipur State League poor performance of the state team in the recently concluded Santosh Trophy in Kerala.

The statement added that the resignations have been accepted.
