Irrigation scheme inaugurated

Kokrajhar, March 11: BTC member Jagadish Sarkar yesterday laid the foundation stone of a flood irrigation scheme that will be built on the Geruah river near Bholabari tea estate in Udalguri district.

The project is being built under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme and is estimated to cost Rs 2.5 crore.

The deadline for completion is two years.

Tangla irrigation division has been given the responsibility of supervising the project and monitor its progress.

The project when completed is estimated to benefit over 2,000 bighas of agricultural land in the area.

Sarkar said the BTC administration was working for all-round development of people. He hoped the project would greatly benefit the farmers in the area. Two more projects are lined up, one at Kacharital that is estimated to cost Rs 3 crore and another canal project between Amguri and Batiamari that is estimated to cost 60 lakh, he said.

He said the project has been cleared by the BTC and funds sanctioned.
