MPs skip Tihar death to save rivers

Tihar jail director-general Vimla Mehra

New Delhi, March 11: The Opposition today chose to take a dip in the holy cause of salvaging the Yamuna and the Ganga rivers, passing by an opportunity in Parliament to take on the government over the death of Delhi gang-rape accused Ram Singh in the high-security Tihar jail.

Singh’s death did not figure either in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha.

Trinamul Congress’s Saugata Roy tried to bring up the incident when the Lok Sabha assembled in the morning but it was drowned by the cause of “Holy Yamuna” raised by Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj which received support cutting across political lines.

Members poured their hearts out over the two holy rivers being polluted, presenting an exemplary bonhomie between the treasury bench and the Opposition, which is known to stall Parliament over failures of the government.

According to rules, MPs have to give prior notice to raise any issue in the House. However, on many occasions, MPs stall House over important developments and demand answers from the government.

Nobody bothered to raise the issue even during zero hour at noon. Even Congress MPs came out in solidarity, demanded a full-fledged discussion on the Ganga and the Yamuna.
