Boxer refuses blood samples during quiz

Chandigarh, March 11: Boxer Vijender Singh was quizzed today by Punjab police over last week’s drug seizure after an estranged partner’s claim they “mistakenly” took drugs, but the Olympian bronze medallist refused to give blood and hair samples.

“We interrogated Vijender on the allegations by Ram Singh (the former partner) and his relationship with Kahlon. We also wanted to take his blood and hair samples but he refused,” a Punjab officer said after the nearly four-hour questioning in a senior Haryana cop’s office.

Kahlon, or NRI Anoop Singh Kahlon, owns the Chandigarh flat where the Rs 130-crore heroin seizure was made last week. A car belonging to Vijender’s wife Archana was parked near the house but no drugs were found in it.

Punjab police sources said Vijender, a deputy superintendent with Haryana police, was ready to provide the blood and hair samples for tests to cops from his own state, not to those from the neighbouring state. “Since his name has cropped up, we allowed our Punjab counterparts to question him,” a Haryana officer said.

The interrogation was conducted by a Punjab DSP and an inspector in the office of an SSP at Panchkula, Haryana. Two private witnesses were also present during the quiz that started at 5pm and ended a little after 8.30pm.

Sources said the boxer was asked about his links with Kahlon and the SUV registered in the name of his wife and found near the NRI’s residence. Asked whether Vijender could be called again, the sources said the option was open.

“Vijender was asked some uncomfortable questions. The answers have to be studied carefully before any conclusion can be reached. Till now, we had only Ram Singh’s confessional statement that he and Vijender consumed heroin supplied by Kahlon. The only missing link was Vijender,” a Punjab officer said.

Ram, Vijender’s friend and roommate at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala, had said they consumed small quantities of heroin supplied by Kahlon for some time mistaking them to be a “food supplement”.

Kulwant Singh, an accused in a drug haul case and lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail, has also been interrogated. He has been brought to Punjab on remand till March 15.
