Salgaocar, Prayag win

Salgaocar FC made it three-in-three on Monday putting it across Sporting Clube de Goa during the 6th U-20 I-League that is underway in the city.

The Goa team won 2-0 at the JRD Tata Sports Complex.

Salgaocar, which shocked defending champions Pune FC with a 2-1 win last week, moved to the next round with Monday’s win.

In the other fixture scheduled of the day Prayag United prevailed over United Sikkim 2-1 to notch a memorable victory at the same venue.

Rayman Fernandes opened the account for Salgaocar finding the back of the net in the 53rd minute to give his team a vital momentum on which they surged for the remaining part of the match.

Though, the Sporting Clube de Goa did make some penetrative runs it was Salgaocar’s Mario Fernandes who managed the second goal of the match. Fernandes managed to beat an otherwise vigilant Sporting goalkeeper with a wonderful shot in the 60th minute.

The score line for the Sporting Club could have been very different but for the heroics of their goalie Rahul Yadav who had an excellent day beneath the bar saving three goals. No wonder Yadav was in for a warm round of applause from the JRD Tata Sports Complex crowd and some back patting from his team mates after the game.

In the other match, Prayag United took the lead courtesy Bidhan Bala who scored in the 8th minute of the match. Sikkim, however, managed to claw back in the game with a 33rd minute Rabin Tamang equaliser. Both teams were tied 1-1 at half-time.

The second-half, hwoever, saw Prayag stepping up their attacks and attacking the rival’s goal with more intensity. It was only a matter of time before Jagannath managed to net in the winner in the 78th minute.

According to schedule, four matches are lined up for Tuesday. While ONGC will lock horns with Dempo at JRD Tata Sports Complex, East Bengal will clash with Tata Football Academy at the same venue later in the day.

Mohun Bagan will take on Churchill Brothers at Gopal Maidan. The other contest at the venue will be between Air India and SESA.
