3 held for molest attempt

Three persons were arrested from Ranchi’s Namkum Bazaar area on Sunday night after they tried to outrage the modesty of a 45-year-old woman.

Sources said the woman had reached the market with her brother around 7pm for her daily shopping. While she went about buying vegetables, her brother — he had decided to wait by his motorcycle — consumed country liquor.

When the woman returned, she found that her brother had passed out cold near the bike. She then made several attempts to wake him up, but to no avail.

Around 10pm, three youths — Sanjay Lakra, Prakash Kumar and Deepu Kumar — who were passing through the area approached the woman offering help. They asked her to come along with them. When she refused, they tried to drag her. By then her brother woke up and tried to resist but given his inebriated state, he was pushed away by the trio.

The ensuing commotion alerted passers by, who suspecting foul play, immediately alerted Namkum police station, a kilometre away.

“The police rounded up the youths. They were brought to the police station along with the woman,” a resident said.

The police said Sanjay was a resident of Lower Bazaar, while Prakash and Deepu were from Korha Toli under Lalpur police station area.

“Hatia DSP Anuranjan Kispotta interrogated the youths at Namkum police station,” the resident claimed.

fficer in-charger of Namkum police station Rajdeo Singh confirmed the incident and claimed that prompt police action had helped save the woman. He, however, refused to divulge any more details.
