Dhubri, March 5: There was tension in the Fakirganj area of Dhubri district after the body of a young AIUDF leader — Kadam Ali — was found at Chandamari under Agia police station last night.
Sources said Ali, 35, who was from Dhubri district, was abducted from his father-in-law’s house in Krishnai of Goalpara district around 7.30pm. His body was later recovered with bullet injuries on his head.
Ali’s family in Fakirganj said he had gone to his father-in-law’s house three days ago and took his wife to Guwahati yesterday for treatment. By evening, he had returned from Guwahati to Krishnai along with his wife.
Around 7.30pm, some people came to his father-in-law’s house and called him out. After that, he went missing and around 9.30pm police recovered his body. A police source in Agia said they had recovered the Maruti Swift (AS-01AD/3100) in which Ali was abducted.
Officer-in-charge of Agia police station Kanak Chandra Bharali said the body was handed over to his family after post-mortem. “We are investigating the case and the recovery of the car used in the murder is a major breakthrough. Hopefully, those involved in the case will be arrested soon,” Bharali said.
The South Salmara-Mancachar sub-division unit of the AIUDF alleged that it as political murder as Ali had contested on an AIUDF ticket from Ravatary gaon panchayat in the district and was defeated by a narrow margin of only 7 votes at the hands of the Congress candidate.
AIUDF district unit president of South Salmara Mancachar, Abdul Awal Mian, said they suspected it was a political murder.
“We demand a proper inquiry into Kadam Ali’s murder and the arrest of the culprits,” Mian said.
AIUDF party workers alleged that Congress goons had torched seven houses of AIUDF supporters at Sonar-par in Dhubri a few days ago.
