AKRSU stages protests

Kokrajhar, March 5: The All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) today staged three-hour demonstrations to demand the separate state of Kamtapur and Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the community.

The members of the union held simultaneous demonstrations in front of the Chirang deputy commissioner’s office at Kajalgaon, Gossaigaon sub-divisional office in Kokrajhar and the Dhubri deputy commissioner’s office from 11am to 2pm.

A memorandum was submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh through the Chirang deputy commissioner.

Talking to reporters at Gossaigaon, AKRSU vice-president Pradip Rai said Kamtapur state and ST status were the long-standing demands of the Koch-Rajbongshi community.

The finance secretary of the union, Gokul Barman, who also participated in the demonstration at Kajalgon, said the lackadaisical attitude of the government in solving the issue had forced the community to start this movement.

He said the union would hold dharnas on March 13 and April 2 at Raj Bhavan in Guwahati and Jantar Mantar in New Delhi respectively.
