Friends kill auto driver after drunken brawl

An auto-rickshaw driver was found dead inside his vehicle in Dhurwa, hardly half a kilometre from the newly inaugurated JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, on Tuesday morning.

According to preliminary investigations, it appears that 25-year-old Ameer Chand Mahto (25), who used to reside near Mecon’s Shyamali Colony in the Doranda police station area of Ranchi, was strangulated to death by his friends after a drunken brawl on Monday night.

The body was spotted around 10.30am on Tuesday.

Four persons — Tileshwar Yadav, Ajay Yadav, Lakhan Yadav and Pradeep Sinha — have been arrested in connection with the murder.

They will be produced before the court on Wednesday.

The body has been sent to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in the state capital for post-mortem examination. A murder case has been registered at Dhurwa police station.

Superintendent of police (city) Vipul Shukla confirmed the murder, saying that there was no particular motive behind it.

“The arrested are friends of Mahto. Last night, they consumed liquor together beside a pond and after sometime, had a fight over some issue. It appears that they strangulated Mahto to death,” he said.

Police sources said as the place from where the body was recovered was a prime location because of its close proximity to the international cricket stadium and the Jagannath Temple, police promptly swung into action to nail the culprits and a breakthrough was achieved in no time.

“A team led by officer-in-charge of Dhurwa police station B.N. Singh started carrying out raids in different parts on the basis of tip-offs. Within three hours, three persons — Tileshwar, Ajay and Lakhan — landed in the net initially. They named the fourth accused, Pradeep, after which he was rounded up,” a police officer said on condition of anonymity.

In the evening, SSP Saket Kumar Singh produced Pradeep before the media.
