Imphal, March 4: S. Premjit Singh took the lead, upsetting top seed Rk. Apollosana to claim full points in the 6th North East Chess Championship 2013 at Kangshang in Khuman Lampak sports complex today.
Playing on table one, Premjit Singh had a hard time taking on top seed Apollosana for a gruelling four hours but finally got the better of him. Premjit now stands with seven points and Apollosana with six-and-a-half points.
Sharing the lead is Chakritombi Singh of Manipur who beat Kevilekho Zumvu of Nagaland to stay on seven points.
Shantanu Borpatra Gohain of Assam beat compatriot Imtiaz Islam Bora to stay on the third spot with six-and-a-half points.
Utpal Barua of Assam is gaining ground as he picked up full points beating seeded player Sunachand Meitei to stay on six-and-a-half points each as well.
At another table, N. Kishan of Manipur beat Biswajit Nag of Tripura to stay at six points while Dharmeshwar Pegu of Assam also made his mark, beating Gurung Rohit of Sikkim to collect six points. G. Inao of Manipur also came up with six points beating compatriots A. Romeo.
Other players — Bankim Singh, Rk. Bhogen, Th. Gobind, O. Ningthem, Shakespeare, M. Danei of Manipur and Gurung Rakesh of Sikkim, Ropfuvilie Nagi of Nagaland and Raluk Dui of Sikkim have also registered their wins in the eighth round today.
Feted: The hockey and archery teams of the Shashastra Seema Bal here were honoured by Guwahati frontier DIG N. Borgahain and his Salonibari-based training Centre counterpart R.K. Bhumbla at the Frontier headquarters here today. The hockey team finished runners-up in the 61st All India Police Hockey Championship at Jammu in December and the archery team won 21 medals to finish sixth in the 1st All-India Police Archery Championship at Ranchi from February 21 to 26.
